Red Sea water samples were collected from four stations in the Sudanese coast at depth of 10 m during July 2011 and analyzed for major ions and trace metals in order to determine their insitu concentration, their distribution patterns, and level of heavy metals contamination in the Sudanese coastal water. The data of the analysis was used in the preparation of the Red Sea artificial water which was used to study how salinity affects the photooxidation of 1,8-dimethylnaphthalene (1,8-DMN) and the water-soluble fraction (WSF) from Norwegian crude oil. The results show a small range of spatial variation for Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl−, K+, and SO2−4 . Also, the concentration of Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl−, and SO2−4 in the Sudanese coastal water is high compared to all... |

The Great Calcite Belt (GCB) is a region of elevated surface reflectance in the Southern Ocean (SO) covering similar to 16% of the global ocean and is thought to result from elevated, seasonal concentrations of coccolithophores. Here we describe field observations and experiments from two cruises that crossed the GCB in the Atlantic and Indian sectors of the SO. We confirm the presence of coccolithophores, their coccoliths, and associated optical scattering, located primarily in the region of the subtropical, Agulhas, and Subantarctic frontal regions. Coccolithophore-rich regions were typically associated with high-velocity frontal regions with higher seawater partial pressures of CO2 (pCO(2)) than the atmosphere, sufficient to reverse the direction of gas... |

ABSTRACT Lead is a toxic metal that affects plant growth and the ecosystem. This study evaluated the lead (Pb) bioaccumulation potential of vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides L.), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), elephant ear (Alocasia macrorrhiza) and ‘embaúba’ (Cecropia sp.). The plant species were tested in a 50% nutrient solution - Hoagland and Arnon, constantly aerated, containing five Pb concentrations: 0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg L-1). The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design in a 4 x 5 factorial scheme, with four replicates. The Pb contents in the plants increased linearly with the Pb exposure concentration. Vetiver was the species with the highest Pb content in the shoots (260.24 mg kg-1) and sunflower, in the roots (44925.20 mg... |

Abstract: The aim of this study is to discuss the concentration distribution, composition and possible sources of trace metals and 13 PAHs in topsoils of the University campus, in the city of São Paulo, the largest city of South America. Mineralogy and granulometry of topsoils (0-10 cm) samples, were determined and As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, V, Zn, Hg, Pt, Pd and PAHs concentrations were quantified in the bulk fraction. The average clay content of soils was 221±61.8 g kg-1 and total carbon was low (mean of 25 g kg-1). Concentrations of metals were generally lower than the reference value established by the São Paulo State Environmental Agency and other studies in the São Paulo urban area, except for Cd, Ni, Pb, Cr and Zn. The mean... |

Monitoring coastal contamination of trace metals using bivalve molluscs as quantitative bioindicators is widely used in many international monitoring programs. The bioaccumulation of metal within an organism results from the interaction between physiological (growth, loss of weight, absorption, accumulation), chemical (metal concentration, speciation, bioavailability) and environmental factors (temperature, SPM, chlorophyll). By utilizing the parameters above in this study, it appears that modeling metal dynamics in marine mussels is a reliable tool. The model allows understanding the bioaccumulation process which results from the interactions between biological, chemical and environmental factors. One of the objective of this study was to couple a... |

Over the past decades, the occurrence, distribution and intensity of harmful algal blooms involving the dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum have increased in marine coastal areas disturbed by anthropogenic inputs. This invasive species produces saxitoxin, which causes the paralytic shellfish poisoning syndrome in humans upon consumption of contaminated seafood. Blooms of A. pacificum have been reported in metal-contaminated coastal ecosystems, suggesting some ability of these microorganisms to adapt to and/or resist in metal stress conditions. This study seeks to characterize the modifications in membrane proteomes (by 2-D electrophoresis coupled to LC-MS/MS), cell growth and morphometry (measured with an inverted microscope), in response to metal stress... |

Intercomparison of trace metal data is a key aspect of the International GEOTRACES program, allowing data from multiple laboratories and countries to be combined to produce high-resolution datasets for the oceans. The use of crossover stations by the GEOTRACES program provides the opportunity both for comparison of analytical techniques and assessment of temporal variability in the cycling of trace metals such as iron (Fe). Here, we present the first comparison of dissolved Fe stable isotope ratio (δ56Fe; relative to IRMM-014) profiles in the oceans, from re-occupations of three locations in the Atlantic Ocean; (1) the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series Station (31.75°N 64.17°W) during the U.S. GEOTRACES IC1 cruise (June 2008) and the U.S. GEOTRACES GA03 cruise... |

Most of trace elements have a non conservative behavior in estuarine environments. It is the case of cadmium, cobalt and caesium for which the fate in estuarine and coastal zones is largely controlled by their distribution between water and suspended particles, which generally have high residence times or can be definitely deposited in these areas. Metallic contaminants and radionuclides can be present under various species : dissolved (mineral and organic complexes), colloidal and particulate forms (adsorbed, precipitated) or integrated by various mechanisms in the organisms. Such distributions are the result of processes (physical, chemical, biological) which are controlled by many factors (ionic strengh, pH, Eh, major cations concentration, nature and... |

Concentrations of major metals (Na, K, Ca, Mg) and some trace metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, Ni, Cu, Co, Pb, Cr, Cd) were determined in water, sediment, benthos and some common fish species from Lake Qarun. Water and sediment samples were collected from seven stations where, the benthos and fish species were collected from three sites representing east, middle and west of the lake. Distribution of studied metals showed that, east part generally had higher contamination than west one which may be attributed to the impact of pollution sources in this area which coming from El-Batts Drain and pumping station in the east part. Mollusca and Crustacea especially Barnacles have the highest concentrations of most heavy metals measured more than Polychaeta which make them... |

Interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere occur at the air-sea interface through the transfer of momentum, heat, gases and particulate matter, and through the impact of the upper-ocean biology on the composition and radiative properties of this boundary layer. The Tara Pacific expedition, launched in May 2016 aboard the schooner Tara, was a 29-month exploration with the dual goals to study the ecology of reef ecosystems along ecological gradients in the Pacific Ocean and to assess inter-island and open ocean surface plankton and neuston community structures. In addition, key atmospheric properties were measured to study links between the two boundary layer properties. A major challenge for the open ocean sampling was the lack of ship-time available... |

Trace metal micronutrients are integral to the functioning of marine ecosystems and the export of particulate carbon to the deep ocean. Although much progress has been made in mapping the distributions of metal micronutrients throughout the ocean over the last 30 years, there remain information gaps, most notable during seasonal transitions and in remote regions. The next challenge is to develop in situ sensing technologies necessary to capture the spatial and temporal variabilities of micronutrients characterized with short residence times, highly variable source terms, and sub-nanomolar concentrations in open ocean settings. Such an effort will allow investigation of the biogeochemical processes at the necessary resolution to constrain fluxes, residence... |
